In central Italy, in beautiful Tuscany, lies the city of Pisa. You may know Pisa as home to the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, but this Italian city has more to offer than a slightly tilted monument.
Many travelers fly in to the Pisa Airport, Galileo Galilei, to access surrounding cities, such as Florence, which is just around an hour away by train, or the beautiful vineyards in nearby Chianti. Visiting all of these unique, surrounding cities in one trip is an excellent way to make the most of your time in Italy or Tuscany, but you will surely want to reserve some of your time for the lovely city of Pisa. The airport in Pisa is located directly next to the train, which can take you directly in to Florence, and makes it an excellent starting point on your trip around Tuscany. You may also take a bus from the airport, and can access any some of the surrounding cities this way, or reach the city center of Pisa in just around ten minutes.
Aside from the Leaning Tower, Pisa also boasts many other noteworthy attractions, such as its historical cathedrals, buildings and museums. In the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, Piazza dei Miracoli, you will find the Leaning Tower, as well as the Cathedral (or Duomo di Pisa), the monumental cemetery, and the baptistery.
The Duomo di Pisa is an excellent combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Home to the artwork of many famous Italian artists, such as Della Robia and Giambologna, the Duomo di Pisa is one of the top attractions in Tuscany. Also found in the Piazza dei Miracoli is Camposanto, the famous cemetery, which was said to be constructed from soil brought back to Pisa from the Fourth Crusade. Built in the 12th century the Camposanto, which translates to “Holy Field,” is noted for its beautiful, Gothic-style architecture, interior courtyard and large collection of Roman sarcophagi.
Another building, which adds to the significance of the Piazza dei Miracoli, is the Pisa baptistery. This baptistery is one of the largest in Italy, and is laced with gothic influence. This impressive monumental building stands nearly as tall as the Leaning Tower, taller if you include its highest statue. Climb to the top of the baptistery for a great view of the Leaning Tower. Begun by Diotisalvi in 1153, the baptistery was later added to and accented by Giovanni and Nicola Pisano. Carved Pisano pulpits and baptismal font contrast its simple interior. Also known for its impressive acoustics, which lucky visitors may be treated to in the form of a shout by one of the baptistery guards.
