Venice

Upon arrival to Venice, or Venezia as the Italians say, you may question whether you traveled there in a time machine. The fact that Venice has remained relatively unchanged in hundreds of years adds to the already uniqueness of this Italian water world.

Located in northeast Italy, Venice is made up of 118 small islands. The capital of the region of Veneto, Venice is a rare place not only in Italy, but also throughout the world.

After visitors look past the awe of alleys filled with water and boats, they can realize there is more to Venice than just lagoons. Venice is home to architecturally beautiful buildings, exquisite marble churches and some of the most treasured works of art in Italy. Although the curiosity of water filled streets and romantic boat rides may draw tourists to Venice, there are many other attractions that keep the number of tourists above the number of residents.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is found on the Grand Canal in Venice. The museum is home to some of the most treasured pieces of modern art and is considered one of the top attractions in Venice. The museum features artists such as Mondrian, Kandinsky, Picasso, Dali, Mondrian and other famous names, but also includes art collected by Peggy of local artists. This cultural gem also has a lovely garden café and museum bookstore.

Gold mosaic domes attract Venice travelers to Saint Mark’s Basilica. This detailed building is the most famous of all of the churches in Venice and one of the top attractions for Venice sightseers. Here you will witness some of the most beautiful Byzantine architecture and realize why it is nicknamed “Chiesa d’Oro” or “The Church of Gold.” Before it was the cathedral of Venice, St. Mark’s Basilica was the chapel of nearby Doge’s Palace. Doge’s Palace is another top attractions in Venice and opened to tourists today as a museum of art.

Another one of the top attractions in Venice is the Ca' Rezzonico museum where you’ll find art from the Throne Room to the pharmacy. Located on the Grand Canal, the Ca' Rezzonico museum is one of the 11 locations, along with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, managed under the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia of Italy. Home to a large collection 18th century Venetian art, the Ca' Rezzonico museum is one of the top museums in Venice. The Venice Chamber Music Orchestra also has concerts in the ballroom of the museum.

From the art and culture to the unique water locked experience, Venice is a must for anyone who wants to travel to Italy. Due to its relatively manageable weather, Venice can be traveled to most times of the year. Rainfall is distributed almost evenly throughout the year therefore there is not a particular rainy weather season in Venice. Temperatures in the winters are cool and the lows usually 30s and 40s Fahrenheit. Summers in Venice are relatively warm and the weather can get rather hot in August. Those planning a summer trip to Venice would take advantage of the best weather in June and July.
